CHAPTER 10

ZAK

Zak headed outside and into his truck. The wind shifted ever so slightly and he caught the scent of something he hadn’t smelled in a long time. He sniffed the air again and whatever wisp he had caught had faded away. What he thought he smelled wasn’t possible. Cave lions had been extinct for thousands of years. But he was certain he had smelled it before and not just in some dream.

He looked up to the second story of Annie’s shop where Sienna had taken up residence. Annie thought she needed a bed. Zak knew the bed Sienna belonged in was his, and he meant to see her there before long. That meant he needed to get his sister situated in the lighthouse. He knew from those at Akiak who wanted him to challenge his sire that the old man was spitting nails about the way Annie had managed to get him off balance and in a headlock of sorts with her blade at his throat. He wondered if the old man knew that Annie had not been joking.

Something had happened while he was away. He meant to talk to Derek about it at the earliest opportunity. He was close to both of his siblings, and he’d thought once Annie got used to him being there again that she’d confide in him the way she had when they were kids, but so far, every time he started to probe, she either steered the conversation in a different direction or got angry and stormed off. What the hell was she hiding?

And then there was Sienna. As he recalled, Annie’s best friend in college had been her roommate, Sara. Annie had insisted they were different women, but Zak wasn’t convinced. He was certain that Sienna meant his sister no harm, but if they were the same woman, why the subterfuge? Why not just admit who she really was?

The most likely scenario was an abusive ex in her past. That would explain a lot of things. Tomorrow he would find a way to get her fingerprints and then run them through a national database via a friend who was still in the service. The guy owed Zak a favor. He would let him know this settled the debt. In order to protect Sienna, he needed to know what he was up against. If it was an ex, Zak would free her of that burden one way or another.

Two women with what he feared were serious, if not deadly, secrets. He needed to figure them out before it exposed them and those around them to danger.

He redirected and focused his thoughts on the construction that he needed to complete on his cottage and the lighthouse where he’d convinced Annie to live. Out there on the point might seem lonely, but he could install an alarm system that would keep them from being vulnerable. And in the lighthouse at least anything or anyone coming for her would have to go through him first.

His cell phone buzzed.
